The European Parliament has approved new binding EU rules aimed at cutting food and textile waste. By December 2030, member states must reduce food waste by 10% in food processing and manufacturing, and 30% per capita in retail, restaurants, service, and household sectors compared to the 2021-2023 average.
Additionally, producers of textiles will be required to pay for the collection, sorting, and recycling of waste textiles under Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes, including those from e-commerce and foreign entities; micro-enterprises will have an extra year to comply.
