The National Research on Benefit Corporations 2024 analyzes the entrepreneurial model that integrates profit objectives with the pursuit of common benefits for society and the environment. Introduced in Italy in 2016, the legal form of Benefit Corporations requires companies to explicitly pursue, in addition to profits, a positive and measurable impact on society and the environment.
From 2016 to 2019, Benefit Corporations increased from about 400 to over 3600. The analysis focused on the years 2019-2022 shows that these companies are dynamic and outperform non-benefit corporations in terms of revenue growth, EBITDA margin, productivity, and strategic investments. They have a greater ability to redistribute value to shareholders and employees.
From a dimensional perspective, Benefit Corporations exceeded 3,600 units by the end of 2023, with a significant employment impact, especially among large companies.
Benefit Corporations represent an innovation in the Italian entrepreneurial landscape, capable of combining profit, social, and environmental impact, and of orienting towards all stakeholders. The research emphasizes the importance of further studies to fully understand their transformative potential and further promote their adoption.
