The article updates the “Doughnut” framework of social and planetary boundaries by introducing 35 refined indicators to monitor global progress from 2000 to 2022 in terms of human deprivation (social shortfalls) and ecological overshoot. While modest gains have been made in reducing deprivation, the data show that humanity’s ecological overshoot has worsened significantly, with many planetary boundaries now severely exceeded.

When disaggregated by income groups, the richest 20 % of countries are shown to contribute disproportionately to ecological overshoot, while the poorest 40 % suffer much of the social shortfall.
