The National Council and Foundation of Chartered Accountants in Italy published a document titled “Operational Methodologies to Mitigate Carbon Washing Risks,” which provides guidelines to counter misleading corporate claims about greenhouse gas emissions. Carbon washing is defined as a specific form of greenwashing involving underreporting of GHG emissions, often aimed at reputation or financial gain.

The document emphasizes that, without consistent standards and credible verification, many companies make environmental claims based on unmeasurable or unimplemented commitments. To reduce this risk, accountants recommend that firms rely on concrete, measurable, transparent, and verifiable data; adopt rigorous environmental reporting; ensure external claims are matched by real actions; and engage financial institutions in decarbonizing their investment portfolios.
