The European Parliament has adopted a new certification framework for carbon removal to promote high-quality projects and combat greenwashing. Thanks to the new rules, farmers will be able to be compensated for agricultural activities that contribute to carbon removal.
The voluntary certification framework aims to promote high-quality carbon removal practices and projects, thus helping to achieve the EU’s climate neutrality goals by 2050. The legislation also includes the establishment of a public EU registry to ensure transparency in these activities.
With this law, the European Parliament aims to regulate various types of carbon removal, such as:
- Permanent carbon storage through industrial technologies;
- Carbon storage in durable products;
- Carbon farming.
